The train cars can absolutely be opened, though some of them take a lot more leverage than others just for rust/wear and tear reasons. From front to back (with the last two being askew), they contain: (1) this is literally a boxcar full of boxes. An incredible surplus of cardboard boxes, strapped together in bundles of 25. (2) Oops! All Toasters (3) empty - in fact, this one is open when he gets there, and it looks as though it was clawed open from the inside. No further signs of any sort of beast or unusual creature can be found in the area. It must have been quite some time ago. (4) many, many kegs of beer. It's real hoppy. (5) barrels upon barrels of gasoline, appropriately mixed for use in the average car or truck. (A couple of these seem to have spilled when the boxcar capsized, their contents puddling on the side-now-floor of the car. The rest are fine, though.) (6) similar-sized barrels, but these are heavily labeled to indicate semi-radioactive biohazardous waste. Luckily, none of this car's barrels seem to have spilled.
Assuming his visits aren't more than like 2-3 days apart and he doesn't do anything to scare them worse somehow, and ESPECIALLY if he bribes them with any kind of non-grass/hay food, I feel like he could have a rapport in under two weeks. It has been a while since they've been ridden (but luckily they at least have been, at some point) so there's going to be a little bit of buck and spook in the horse once he tries to ride it, but that goes away soon enough.
